Sonepur also known as subarnapur, is a town & district head quarters of sonepur district of Odisha.. sonepur is also famous for cotton,silk,handloom,prawns&terracotta etc.

sonepur is located in the western part of odisha. sonepur handloomwoven sarees & dress material are known for their unique Bomkai designs locally known as Bandha designs.

Bomkai saree is a handloom saree from odisha,india.. it is an origin of Bomkai ,Ganjam district in the state & is primarily produced by the Bhulia community of sonepur district. Bomkai is one of the identified geographical indication of india. sonepur handloom sarees, patas & silk sarees are popular item displays at various fashion shows .

the Bomkai saree,one of the traditional saree of east india are created by the adept artisans who excellenty define tradition & culture of india by the simple work of needle. the traditional figured saree from the southeren odishan costal plains is the bomkai saree. this saree is named after the village where it was discovered in early 1980s.

The original & traditional weaving of this saree was made in low-count cotton yard which is usually, coarse,heavily & dyed in intense colors.

Sonepur famous for Bomkai Cotton Saree

Sonepuri Sari or Bomkai Saree is produced by the "bhulia" community of Subarnapur district of odisha. In a particular, the famous saree designs Bomkai are the traditional designs that was produced in the village named Bomkai of Ganjam district of Odisha. During the time of Ramai dev the then ruler of Patna it was introduced in Sonepur. Sonepurhandloom sarees, Sonepuri paatas and silk sarees are popular items.


The Sonepuri Sari called Radhakunja was a great attraction in the wedding of Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. The PTI reported that three Sonepuri Sari were designed by master craftsman Chaturbhuja Meher at Sonepur and suppiled to the Bachchans.
